The Boiling Frog Attack is a chess opening as simple and easy to learn as the London System but far more aggressive and tricky. The name ‘Boiling Frog Attack’ is inspired by the ‘Boiling Frog’ theory, which states that if you place a frog in boiling water, it will jump out immediately. However, if you place it in warm water and slowly heat it, the frog won’t notice the danger until it’s too late.

Fun fact: the Boiling Frog’ theory is not correct but many people still believe it and use it as an example

This opening mirrors that concept perfectly. Black plays standard, seemingly safe moves, while White gradually builds up attacking threats that appear harmless—until it’s too late. And Black is checkmated before they realize the danger.

Some players know this better by its classical name, the Stonewall Attack. It is because you build a chain of pawns that is hard to break. White starts with 1.d4 and constructs a strong pyramid of pawns in the center.

It usually occurs after the following moves. 1. d4 d5 2. e3 Nf6 3. f4 Nc6 4. Bd3 Bg4 5. Nf3 e6 6. O-O Bd6 7. c3 O-O 8. Nbd2 h6 9. Qe1

As you can see in the diagram this is a very solid setup, which black usually won’t know how to play against.
