Carlsen Broke Every Chess Principle And Wins In 18 Moves
Today we’ll analyze an exciting chess game between Magnus Carlsen and Jan-Krzysztof Duda, played during the 2021 Meltwater Tour Final. In this game, Magnus Carlsen broke several key chess opening principle. Yet, he still managed to defeat the world’s No. 18 top player, Duda, in just 18 moves!
Carlsen adopted a gambit style right from the start, sacrificing a pawn, which Duda declined. This was likely showing too much respect for Carlsen’s play. 9…Qxc3 would indeed gain a pawn but after 10.Bd2, black will have to move the queen again. Thus, white will be significantly ahead in development, while black only has his queen out.
However, Carlsen persisted with the pawn sacrifice on the following move. Ultimately, this forced Carlsen into a situation where he had to move his king, losing the right to castle. He apparently intended on breaking all classical chess opening principles!
Despite this, Carlsen launched a devastating middlegame attack featuring a brilliant rook lift and a piece sacrifice. Ultimately, this combination lead to an unstoppable checkmate.
