  1. In Lesson 5 of Winning the Middlegame, at 13:30, after Black plays …Bd5, I don’t understand why c3-c4 isn’t a good move. It prevents …Bc4 while gaining space and forcing Black to decentralize his bishop. The weakening of the d4-pawn doesn’t seem significant in the ensuing position, so it appears that White has won a tempo as well.

    1. I guess Ivanchuk wanted to focus his pieces towards the king-side, and was unwilling to put his rook on defensive position (c1) after c4-Rac8.

      Anyway, I agree with you that it’s double-edge position, and it was the best option for White.
