Chess Geometry

There are many lessons taught in chess but one that is often overlooked is chess geometry. Some may talk about them in-passing but never really delve deeper into the topic. That’s what we’ll change in this lesson to help you develop a better understanding of chess geometry.

The movement of pieces, control of squares and spatial relationships between pieces all follow geometric principles. Understanding these patterns can enhance a player’s ability to visualize positions, calculate tactics and execute plans effectively.

The Grid Structure of the Chessboard

A standard chessboard consists of an 8×8 grid with 64 squares. This structured layout forms the foundation of chess geometry, influencing movement patterns and piece coordination. Key aspects of the board’s geometry include:

  • Ranks and Files: Horizontal rows (ranks) and vertical columns (files) define spatial organization and piece activity.
  • Diagonals: These long, slanted lines are crucial for bishops and queens, who thrive on open diagonal paths.
  • Centers and Edges: The board’s center (d4, d5, e4, e5) is strategically important, while edge squares limit piece mobility.

Half of the Board

One of the most fundamental geometric thinking in chess is dividing the board in half. There are several ways to do this.

Your Side & The Opponent’s Side

The most seemingly natural way to divide the board in half is to think of your side and your opponent’s side of the board. This would have a built-in division if you’re using a regular folding chessboard.

Thinking about the board this way helps you remember the most important element in chess – an attack. Therefore, one should focus his thinking on attacking. If an attacking move is not yet available, preparatory moves must be made in order to make an attack possible.

You should think of how you can move your pieces to your opponent’s side of the board and create threats. Conversely, on your side of the board, you should neutralize any threats posed by your opponent’s pieces.

Kingside and Queenside

Back when descriptive chess notation was used, people would be constantly reminded of the kingside and the queenside. We still keep this in mind today when choosing where to castle the king.

If most of your pieces are concentrated on one side, you are likely able to launch successful attacks on that side. Of course, you’d normally like to launch these attacks towards the opponent’s kings as that is more forcing.

Some of the most important ideas you can get from dividing the board this way are concentrating your pieces towards an attack and preventing your opponent’s pieces from going to the side. This can be done by closing the center with pawns or using your pieces to block their path.

In fact, this was a central theme in the video lesson we published on the Christmas Eve of 2020. The lesson is largely about the golden rule of the dynamic material balance. Diagonals: Light & Dark Squares

Dividing the board into half as diagonals is probably less frequent in our thought process. However, this is actually important not just in the endgame where at least one bishop is involved. It is also important to think about these diagonals or in terms of light and dark squares as early as the opening since it will help you with creating good structures and developing your plan.

For instance, some players would fianchetto their bishop to place it on the long diagonal. This, however, creates potential weaknesses if the bishop is traded off. Thinking of the board in terms of light and dark squares, would help you make use of the bishops more effectively.

If you have just one bishop, place your pawns on opposite color so that they do not block its path. They would also complement each other and the bishop would be able to cover the weak squares.

Center

Every chess player must have heard that it is important to control the center. The center is where pieces can be most active, meaning they control the most squares there. Pieces in the center can usually create threats on both the kingside and the queenside.

The squares marked in blue are the central squares of the board. However, there is also use in discussing the expanded center, the ones marked yellow.

It is not important whether the center is controlled with pawns, conforming with classical and modern chess theory, or with pieces as espoused by hypermodern chess theory. The important thing is that you are vying for control over it.

The Quadrant

Once you have integrated thinking about the different halves of the board in your thought process, you’ll be more accustomed to dividing the board into even smaller parts. You can think of the board as your kingside, your queenside, your opponent’s kingside and your opponent’s queenside.

These are areas where you can direct your pieces for an attack and when necessary for defense. Since one of your plans is to cut off enemy pieces from your area of attack, you should also avoid getting your pieces cut off from the defense of your king.

Interference and Geometry in Chess

Once we understand that the chessboard can be divided into parts, we can concentrate our attack in a particular portion. At the same time, we can use pawns and pieces to cut off opponent’s pieces from where the action is.

A practical application of this is with the use of interference. One of the most famous applications of an interference happened in the game between Bobby Fischer and Pal Benko during the 1963/64 US Championship.

What would you move if you were playing as white?

The most intuitive move would be to push the e-pawn to e5. This simultaneously threatens checkmate in one with Qxh7 and to capture the knight on d6. However, Black has a strong response, f5!

This blocks the checkmating threat and forces white to trade queens.

Fischer, however, found an absolutely brilliant move, thus, won the game.

He sacrificed the rook to prevent f5. This also creates an interference between black’s pieces and his king. Notice that all the action happens towards black’s kingside. Fischer was able to cut off the defense from other pieces.

Piece Alignment and Other Geometrical Patterns

Domination with Chess Geometry

While domination is what you would want to do in your chess games, it is an actual tactic. Domination occurs when a player controls all movement squares of an enemy piece or at least the important ones.

Take a look at this position. Unfortunately, easy surface level solutions might cost you the game.

d4+ should have always been a candidate move since it is the only possible move that delivers a check

The black king cannot go to the white squares along the long diagonal because it will be a  check when the pawn promotes to a queen. The knight wasn’t just preventing the rook from going to the 8th rank, its presence in that part of the board dominates the king and the rook. If the black king moves to a dark square, the knight can deliver a fork to the king and the rook. After the rook is captured, there is no stopping the white pawn from promoting into a queen.

Chess Breaking the Rules of Geometry

In regular geometry, the shortest distance from one point to another is a straight line. However, in chess, this rule doesn’t always apply. Pieces can move in a zigzag and reach a square with the same number of moves.

This is because the distance from one square to another is not measured by length by the number of moves. Let’s look at an example.

In order for Black to win, the king must first shoulder the opponent’s king. If he goes straight horizontally, the White king can come close enough to dominate and jail the king and the game will end in a stalemate.

Puzzles with Chess Geometry

There are several endgame studies that feature chess geometry like Reti’s Position which utilizes the square rule. However, there are other puzzles which have drawn in not only chess players but also mathematicians. Let’s see two of the most famous.

The Knight’s Tour

The Knight’s Tour is a famous mathematical chess puzzle where a knight moves across the chessboard, visiting each square exactly once. This problem has fascinated mathematicians, chess enthusiasts and puzzle solvers for centuries due to its complexity and elegance.

How did you do?

 Given its difficulty, one might think that a knight’s tour is rare. But surprisingly, it’s not. Using a lot of computational power, mathematicians were able to determine that there are exactly 26,534,728,821,064 ways a closed knight’s tour can occur. Despite a lot of research, we still don’t have a similar number for open knight’s tours.

The Eight Queens

The Eight Queens Puzzle is a famous combinatorial problem in chess where the goal is to place eight queens on an 8×8 chessboard such that no two queens threaten each other. This means that no two queens can share the same row, column or diagonal.
