Perhaps in every other chess game that you play, your opponents might try to pin your knight with their bishop by playing Bg5 across various different openings. Therefore, you should know how counter this Bg5 pin effectively.

In today’s lesson, I’m sharing with you the most brutal way to punish Bg5 pin on your knight. It is by delivering a counter-pin against your opponent by playing Bg4, pinning their knight and inviting them to attack your bishop with h3, and then use the Fishing Pole Trap to launch a devastating kingside attack.

I’m sharing this method using the games of George H Derrickson, who was a very talented player and problemist who, sadly, died on 16 April 1862, at age 16. Several nineteenth-century sources referred to him as a potential second Morphy.
