In this lesson, you will learn the simplest and most effective way to counter the Queen’s Gambit chess opening as Black. The Queen’s Gambit arises after the moves 1.d4 d5 2.c4. White offers a pawn sacrifice to gain control of the center.

After Black responds with 2…e6 — entering the Queen’s Gambit Declined, White plays 3.Nc3. Black can surprise their opponent with the Janowski Variation by playing 3…a6. This is a rare, solid, and powerful opening variation to counter the Queen’s Gambit.

Black’s idea is to capture the pawn on c4 with 4…dxc4 and then play 5…b5. This is a universal opening idea, so it can be used irrespective of what White plays. In both 3.Nc3 and 3.Nf3, Black can continue his plans with this line. This is suitable for both blitz/rapid and classical games. This opening variation is also suitable for players of any level.

Only 1% of games feature this variation. This significantly increases your chances of catching opponents off guard early in the game, since they would most likely know nothing about this variation.

Here’s the best part: the Janowski Variation can also be used against almost any of White’s first moves, except for 1.e4, making it a universal and versatile opening system.
