Kasparov Teaches How To PUNISH Bg4 Pins Strategically

In this lesson, I’d like to show you how Garry Kasparov used to punish the bishop pins (Bg4 pins) on your knights strategically. You will learn how the former world champion used this strategy to counter this pin.

You can use this instead of going with the aggressive approach of chasing the bishop with h3 and g4, which could weaken your kingside. With this strategy you can steadily improve the position of your pieces and outplay your opponents.

The idea is to bring the queenside knight from b1 to g3 in order to threaten the bishop. This is feasible because the knight is not developed to c3 instead it is rerouted to d2. in place of the knight, Kasparov pushes the c-pawn to c3 which gives an escape square for the bishop should black try to exchange it for the knight. It also limits the squares black’s knight can go to.
