What are these *.pgn files?
PGN stands for Portable Game Notation. It is a standard format for a chess database (a collection of chess games). As a result, nearly all chess programs will open them. If you do not have a chess program installed on your computer, then you may use either of the following programs:
Both of the above programs are capable of working with PGN files and are completely free. Simply download and install one of these programs on your computer and you are ready to go.
We suggest Scid as it will open PGN files by default after the installation is complete.
- If you are an owner of one of my paid courses, the required software is included with the course. You only need to run the graphical menu of the course (file “autorun.exe”) and follow its instructions to install the necessary software.
- If the *.pgn file is compressed (e.g. has *.zip format), then you’ll need to decompress the file before trying to work with it. For more on this, please consult the following video tutorial: LINK
