14 Practical Positional Chess Rules to Get Better at Positional Play

Tactical positions can sometimes feel easier than positional ones. That’s why in this lesson, I’ll explain 14 practical positional chess rules that can help you make better decisions in quiet middlegame positions.

When there is a direct threat, a hanging piece, or an obvious attack, you know you need to calculate. But in positional chess, the position may look quiet. Nothing is immediately wrong, but there is also no clear tactic or forcing move.

That is where many players get stuck.

The goal is not to memorize another long list of chess concepts. The goal is to develop a clearer sense of what deserves your attention when there is no obvious tactic.

You’ll learn how to find useful moves in quiet positions, avoid random moves that only “look reasonable” and build plans when there is no direct attack

These simple rules will help you recognize what stronger players focus on and mprove your positional chess understanding:

  • Trade off their main defender
  • Offense is the best defense
  • Get your Knights to outposts
  • The Kingside Knight belong in front of the King (f3/f6 squares)
  • When you don’t know what to do, attack their pawns
  • Block their pawns to slow their development
  • If you see a tempting move, don’t rush it.
  • If your opponent’s pawn runs too fast, don’t forget about en passant
  • Counter a pin aggressively
  • Neutralize opponent’s piece on your side of the board
  • Attack with forcing moves on their side of the board
  • If you trade, be sure you are paid. Only trade pieces when it benefits you
  • A Bishop is stronger than a Knight (generally)
  • Restrict your opponent’s Knight by placing your Bishop 2 squares apart

Once you start seeing positions this way, positional chess becomes much easier to understand and play. And you’ll be able to navigate confusing middlegames with more confidence.
