2 Chess Rules To Improve Faster

I have been coaching for the last 15 years, and I have encountered many people who got into chess. Unfortunately, a common story often unfolds like this: someone gets interested in chess, learns the fundamentals, and initially progresses quickly, climbing up to a rating of 1200 ELO to 1400 ELO.

However, after reaching this point, they hit a plateau and get stuck. Their ratings fluctuate, but they never make a breakthrough in chess. It’s not that they lack a significant amount of chess knowledge, but they miss just a few critical ideas. They keep making the same mistakes, which are very easy to avoid if they knew these key concepts.

Therefore, today I’ll share with you 2 golden rules that will help you improve in chess much faster. These key ideas will transform your chess thinking system and help you find the best moves easily. These principles will also help you prevent blunders and ensure you don’t let a winning advantage slip away.

Understand How Chess Ratings Work in this article.

Rule #1 Avoid tunnel vision

Often when players see a good move or idea, they try to make it happen without thinking about the best response of their opponent. They get into a tunnel vision and subsequently, fail to see the right idea. The solution is simple: keep an open mind and look for other candidate moves for other attacking options.

Rule #2 Question first move impulses

In line with the first rule, players often get possessed by their idea that they lose an otherwise equal or winning position. To avoid this, think about the consequences of your move. Consider primarily the forcing moves that your opponent can play on your half of the board.
