As an experienced chess coach, I have analyzed thousands of chess games from my students throughout my career. I have noticed that there are just a few common mistakes that chess players make below the 1500 ELO rating level.

• Increase the pressure and push your opponent to take. Since we know that “to take is a mistake,” make your opponent take. These kinds of exchange usually benefit those who do not initiate it as it helps them develop a piece.
• Move forward and create threats. In order to win in chess, you need to attack. This requires you to go forward with your pieces to your opponent’s side of the board, where they can attack.
• When attacked, think about counterattacking first. Often players think of retreating when they are attacked but strong players think of counterattacking opportunities
• Calculate when there are threats. You don’t always need to calculate your moves. Often you can follow principles. However, when there are threats, you need to calculate until the end of the forcing line.
• Consider your opponent’s intentions. Many players get so caught up with their own plans, they forget that their pieces might be hanging or their opponent may play strong attacking moves. Hence, often this causes them to make mistakes.
• Good things come to those who bait. Use indirect defense. Your opponents may also be caught up in their own plans. There are times when you can exploit this. Invite their piece into a forward position where they cannot go back.
