While I have to discipline myself not to visit Danish bakeries too often, I certainly enjoy playing for an opening the Danish Gambit! It’s one of the most aggressive chess openings for White after 1.e4. The opening arises after the moves: 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 dxc3. Usually, White offers up another pawn by moving 4.Bc4, but we’ll explore a more uncommon immediate recapture with 4.Nxc3.

The Danish Gambit is a fantastic opening choice for players rated below 1600 ELO. From the starting position, White boasts a solid 54% win rate. That number only increases as you master its tactics and traps.

While this version of the gambit doesn’t have the extremely active bishops unlike the main line, it is more solid. And since it is less used, there’s a higher probability that your opponents wouldn’t know how to handle it, much less counter the threats.
