Today I will teach you how to crush the Italian Game, one of the most popular chess openings, as Black. The Italian Game is a family of chess openings beginning with the moves: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4.

After Black responds with 3…Bc5, we enter the Giuoco Piano chess opening. Although the mainline is 4.c3, most chess players (especially beginners and club players) play the natural 4.0-0.

White’s Dubious Plan

After the following moves: 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Bc5 4. 0-0, this is the 2nd most popular move in this position. The main line is 4. c3, aiming to play d4 in the next move. But here White simply castles and plans to continue the development of his pieces in the most traditional way.

4…Nf6 5. d3 d6 6. Bg5?! This is the most popular 3rd move in this position. White’s idea is to pin the f6-knight and maybe later continue with Nc3 and Nd5 increasing the pressure.

This move by itself does not constitute an error. However, in practice, the plan used by White is flawed as it allows Black to launch an aggressive attack on the kingside. Although Stockfish does not consider this attack to be totally decisive, in practice, it is difficult to defend, which results in Black quickly and decisively destroying White. Let’s see how the game went.

6…h6 7. Bh4. White continues with his strategy of maintaining the pin.

Crushing Kingside Attack

7…g5! 8. Bg3 h5!

This move has the highest win rate in this position. The threat is to play h4, winning the bishop on g3. White has a couple of options here. 9. Nxg5?? Another blunder that shows how difficult to handle this position is for White. 9…h4! 10. Nxf7 hxg3!?

A very creative move! Black is giving up his queen to keep attacking! However Qe7!! was the best one according to Stockfish.

11. Nxd8 Bg4 12. Qd2 Nd4. Now taking on g3 is not good because Ne2+, and White has to give his queen. 13. Nc3?? The final blunder!! 13…Nf3+!! 

14. gxf3 Bxf3
