One of the characteristics of a fianchettoed bishop is that without it, the pawn structure leaves weak squares. These weak squares can be exploited. But in order to do that the you need to eliminate bishop first. Fischer often formed a battery with his bishop and queen to trade off the bishops.

Of course, your opponent wouldn’t just stand idle waiting for you to execute to your plan. Hence, Fischer’s attacking plan includes solidifying the center so that your opponent doesn’t end up exchanging your bishop for a knight.
